The Rules of Dodgeball
The rules are simple. You're out if:

* A ball hits you and falls to the floor
* You drop a ball thrown at you
* Someone catches your ball
* You step out of bounds or over the center line
* A ball hits you and another teammate (you're both out)

School rules

Sometimes at my school, we play a variation on dodge ball were the fold down basketball hoops are put down. When a ball hits the backboard, one person who was out gets to come back in. If you make a basket, everyone on your team is in. the rest of the rules are the same

Rules

We Started a league here in Australia about a month ago and to work out the rules we found as many rule books (from the net) as we could, reviewed them and compiled them in something we thought would work for us. Our league is an amatur league but you need solid rules or there is great contraversy about when people are out etc. Your refs need to know the rules backwards as well. Our rules are made for 6 balls and for players who are just your average person. Out teams are mixed so we have a variety of skill levels in the one league.

Our Rules can be found here: Rules
Download the full rules from the link on this page. They are better than the basic ones.

Dodge Ball League in Australia

Hi
Where have you set up your league? How many teams are playing? What is the cost? How often to you play?

dodgeball rules...

I think the NDL has some good rules, or at least they have a rulebook. I checked it out, and they're pretty solid. It's actually more complicated than you may think...

The Simple Rules are Simple

Those are definitely basic rules. Good enough to play a pickup game at the gym, but not good enough for a tournament. Official dodgeball rules would be just about as complex as the official rules of any sport. Football and Baseball official rules could be more complex due to the fact that there are different positions and more fully-featured playing areas. The offical rules of dodgeball would probably have complexity equivalent to those of professional volleyball or tennis. Note: Soon there will be a section of the site dedicated exclusively to the Official Open Rules of Dodgeball. It will include suggested rules for each variation of the game. Variations will be based on skill or competition level and variants within each level. A hypothetical example [Level:Variant]...
  • Junior: Basic
  • Amateur: Basic
  • Amateur: NADA
  • Amateur: Time-limit
  • College: NCAA
  • College: Intramural
  • Professional: Basic
  • Professional: USDL
  • etc...
The rules will be maintained by the dodgeball community. So if you don't like a particular rule, you should suggest an alternative!

basic rules

Hi there. I am interested in teaching dodge ball to a my son's homeschool group. The children are between the ages of 6 and 11 yrs. The official rules are great, but there is so much to try to get them to remember. Is there a set of more "basic" rules with which to begin? Any help is greatly appreciated.

NDL Rules

The National Dodgeball League has a real simple rules section. www.NationalDodgeball.com

They use red rubber balls but if you want, you can always switch them with foam balls or Rhino Skins depending on the kids ages.

Good Luck
