Las Vagas Event

I am posting a blog wrote by one of my players who played in the Las Vegas tournament. I thought it was well written and expressed the majority (if not all) of the Orange County Dodgeball players.

Also, I read your post about your games taking 38 minutes! That is just crazy! I can't see how and why you would let a game go for that long. I guess everyone runs thier leagues differently, in my situation we are on a time constraint, therefor our games max out at 7 minutes. How do your fans feel about the games going for that long? Are the balls constantly flying back and forth or is it alot of holding?

Anyways, here's the blog:

Who knew that Dodgeball would bring me to a revelation in life? See I’ve always tried to be as honest as possible in my day to day life (funny concept for a salesman huh?). In fact I usually warn people that don’t know me very well to be careful when asking my opinion on anything in their life, cause they’re gonna get it like it or not, good or bad. And I prefer the same in the people I hang out with. My best friends in the world are the ones that can look me right in the eye and tell me I’m being an asshole (which I have a tendency to do) and then buy me a beer 5 minutes later. I try my best to do what I say and say only what I mean.

So recently me and some friends of mine attended a Dodgeball tournament in Las Vegas. Now for those of you reading this that were there, know now that I am going to give the guys running the league a little slack because it was their first major tournament and I just don’t have the energy to list everything that was wrong about that tournament. However the other players are another matter entirely. We played what I can only describe as an honest game. When we were tagged and we knew it we walked off the court whether the ref called it or not. When there was a call that was questionable we argued our case to the ref with respect and took the refs decision as final. The team that we played was not so honest, obviously getting hit and staying in if the ref didn’t call it, arguing calls to the point that the ref would allow them to stay in just to keep them quiet and just generally cheating their way throughout the game. What hurts most is this team went on to win the tournament when they didn’t even deserve to be in there at all. So my revelation as I tell you now is….honesty is for suckers.

A funny thing happened though. Those refs that watched us walk off the court when we were hit and they didn’t see it….shook our hands and said “way to play the game”. The teams that were watching our game and traveled from all over the country including Alaska and New York just to kick our asses in this game of ours, cheered for us, brought me ice and eye drops when I took a hellacious face shot, invited us out that night and bought us beers and outright respected us for the way we played the game. Their fans cheered for us and congratulated US as we walked off that court, not the team that won. We won something I feel was far greater than any prize money could have meant to us, the respect of our fellow players and the self-respect from knowing we played the best we could and the most honest game we could.

So in the end I'll take honesty. You can call me a sucker any day, you just better be ready to buy me a beer 5 minutes later.

Yeah, I'm sure a lot of people are wiped out. It was a long weekend. Some people are probably still not even back yet. I'm not.

It was a blast. There were few crazy moments (a lot of testosterone) and some waiting around for the shuttle bus, but overall we met some cool dodgeballers and had a great time. Last Man Standing was AWESOME. We'll be back next year with a vengance.

I'm going down to the pool right now and soak my arm. Catch you Later.

22 teams from across the country...winning team took home $7,000.

Total Purse was $15,000
There was money for First and Second in two divisions and also $1,000 for the Last Man Standing.

Lot's of great match-ups. Some teams brought a bunch of fans that were really into it. We had a lot of fun.

Was it all that it was pumped up to be?

If so, we will go next time.

The coolest thing was seeing so many different teams from so many different states. California sent a few teams but there had to be over dozen different states represented. We'd been playing the same teams back home for almost two years. This took it to a whole new level. We can't wait to take on a couple of the teams again next year. My guess is it's only gonna get bigger.
