Few Questions that have come up?

The Rules of Dodgeball
Hey fellow Dodgeballers,

So a few questions have been raised in our dodgeball training sessions that I can’t seem to find answers for in the various rules. I’ve put my interpretation hoping people here can offer their opinion?

1) So you are allowed to leave the court via the back line to retrieve deadballs. We’ve had it where play gets down to a few people players run out the back to retrieve ball just as someone is throwing a ball at them, thus dodging the ball or if hit they say hey I was getting the ball. In my mind retrieving balls is necessary to keep game going but shouldn’t be used to gain an advantage. Not sure how to tackle this issue, because it’s a bit of a grey area?

2)What if the ball hits you while retrieving ball, or as re-entering court? we currently count this as a no hit.

3) Are you out if it hits you in the head and you we’re ducking down? I think yes, if the ball is below head height.

4) If the ball hits you and then teammate catches it? In this case, the opponent is out, and the person hit is still in.

5) The ball hits you and then you catch it. We treat this as a normal catch.

6) The start of the game, you run in and grab one of the six balls. How far away must the opposing players be before you can hit them? We currently say both you and opponent must be about 1 meter from the deadzone. Is that right? This is probably hampered by the lack of dodgeball court markings.

Many Thanks,

Scottyb

Thanks and one more :)

Thanks for the answers guys. I had one more question...

7) One of our guys throws the ball up in the air and then hits it mid air (kind of like a Tennis serve). It gets good power but isn't very accurate.

Is this allow? I remember reading punching the ball is not allowed, he describes it as a plam, as he makes contact with the ball with his palm, rather than a clenched fist punch.

Thanks, :)

punching the ball

7. What you describe is like a vollyball strike. Basically, it is still a punch and the ball should be declared 'dead'.

answers

Rulings on these questions will vary from one set of rules to another. The way I would rule:
1. When on the court you are OUT. If over the back line, NOT OUT.
2. Same answer as 1.
3. We rule as OUT. We only count Head Shots when players are standing.
4. We play it as nothing counts after the hit. If you play the ball as still live, player hit is out, thrower is out, one of catching player's team comes back in. We play FIRST OUT - FIRST IN.
5. We count this as a catch.
6. We play that it must go to the back of the court, at least 6 feet from the back line.

reply.

1. If you go to retrieve balls through the back line and you are hit retrieving balls. Your out.
2. Out.
3. If your ducking and balls hits you in head. Out.
4. Once the ball hits a person, its a dead ball. Person hit with the ball is out. Thrower is in.
5. Normal Catch.
6. Its different in lots of leagues. Use best judgement.
